Army Corps of Engineers respond to Grand Tower Levee District

GRAND TOWER (WSIL) -- Officials from the Army Corps of Engineers responded Tuesday night after leaders of the village of Grand Tower

The St. Louis District Levee Safety Program Manager tells News 3 they've been in constant contact with their levee sponsors throughout the year.

News 3 reported last week that 10 years of historic flooding is wearing out the grounds in the village leaving the levee, sinkholes and more in need of repairs.

The Corps says the levee repairs are expected to be completed by this summer, but conditions are not good and high river levels have delayed work flow.

They also tell News 3 the sinkholes on Front Street are not under Public Law 84-99 and it's a shared responsibility between levee districts, local, state and federal governments to take care of it.

"We say that the number one priority of the Corps of Engineers is life safety and our partners play an important role in ensuring that these levees continue to reduce flood risks and make our communities safe places to live and work," says Rachel Lopez.

News 3 reached out to Grand Tower Levee District Commissioner Shawn McMahan, who says the Corps has not responded to his messages and river levels are low enough to continue working on the levee.

This is a developing story and News 3 will have more updates when they become available.
