CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- Amtrak is already limiting service across the country due to COVID-19 coronavirus concerns, but now more changes are being done to stop the spread of the virus.

According to the company's cash payments will no longer be accepted. That policy includes ticket purchases along with food and beverage items on the trains. Customers who use Amtrak will have to use their debit or credit cards instead.

The change is one of several the company has taken to try and reduce COVID-19 risks. The list below is from the Amtrak

  • Enhancing cleaning protocols: We have increased the frequency of cleaning services on our trains and at our stations.
  • Increasing disinfectant supplies: We have increased the quantity of sanitizers and disinfectant wipes available for customers and employees on our trains and stations.
  • Reinforcing good hygiene practices: We are regularly sharing best practices with employees and customers on ways to protect against communicable diseases.
  • Going Cashless: As an added measure to ensure the health and safety of our customers and employees, we will temporarily be accepting cashless payments only in stations and on trains.
