(CNN) -- The Denver Zoo is going to start vaccinating some of its animals against COVID-19, now that 70 percent of Colorado is vaccinated.

Zoo officials say they will begin as soon as next week. Primates and carnivores will be among the first to be vaccinated.

The veterinary vaccine company Zoetis is providing the shots for the animals. The company's vaccine is designed primarily for mammals.

"For our animals, we want to be able to protect them similar to we're trying to protect people," said VP of Animal Health at Denver Zoo, Dr. Scott Larsen.

There have been several documented cases of COVID-19 in large cats, monkeys and certain rodents.
