(WSIL) -- Community health centers throughout Illinois are now getting new funds from the CARE Act to help with their COVID-19 response.
Forty-five centers around the state are expected to share $52 million.
The coronavirus stimulus package provides much-needed funding for health centers to continue serving the community.
"It's a major relief. As the CEO, I'm looking at our budget everyday. I'm looking at how is this impacting our organization as a whole," said Shawnee Health Service CEO Patsy Jensen.
Shawnee Health Service in Carterville was glad to receive a $1 million grant, as well as Rural Health Inc. in Anna, who received over $750,000.
"When we heard that we were going to get monies form the stimulus packages, we were very excited because not only will it help keep employees, with the job, it will help us be able to make our place safer," said Rural Health Inc. CEO Cindy Flamm.
Both CEOs say the grant will help acquire medical supplies, improve telehealth services and fight the COVID-19 spread.
"Right now, we're setting up tents in our driveway, and those tents are staffed with registered nurses who are going to be performing COVID-19 screening," said Jensen.
"Going forward, we hope to be able to get some antibody test kits so we test individuals to assist in who's got antibodies and who doesn't," said Flamm.
The CEOs say, despite the pandemic, their facilities will be there to support everyone.
"The underserved, those individuals who are uninsured, we are there to offer medical treatment to all these individuals," said Flamm.
"Our staff's equipped to help people get the resources they need, whether it's healthcare, or social services, or food, or other things they may need," said Jensen.
