MARION (WSIL) -- With the need for personal protective equipment increasing due to COVID-19, a southern Illinois man is coming up with a solution to help fill the gap locally.
Dav Glass, , is putting his technology and handyman skills to use during these stay-at-home orders.
Glass and his family are making face shields, and they're doing it all out of their garage with a laser cutter.
"A few weeks ago, I found plans online on how to make face shields with a laser cutter," he recalls.
The instructions were from Europe, so Glass made some modifications to the design and came up with a prototype. He then contacted the UPS store, which donated materials so he could start mass producing face shields.
"I said if I'm going to be quarantined at home, I'm going to do some good for the area and make as many of these masks as I possibly could," he says.
These face shields are going out to hospitals, the Marion VA, EMT services, police, fire departments, nursing homes and even food service employees.
Glass has gotten others involved including his neighbors, who are also making face shields with a laser cutter out of their garage.
Altogether, the families are able to make up to 150 face shields each day.
Glass has started a GoFundMe to help with care of the laser cutters as some of its tubing only lasts between 100-150 hours before needing to be replaced.
