Rep. Bailey removed from House floor for not wearing face mask

  • 0

SPRINGFIELD (WSIL) -- The southern Illinois lawmaker who is suing Governor JB Pritzker made more headlines on the House floor Wednesday afternoon.

"Representative Bailey will be removed from the House floor. Doormen, please remove Representative Bailey."

Fellow representatives voted to remove Darren Bailey (R-Xenia) after he refused to wear a mask.

On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Madigan had issued a statement that he would propose changes to House rules requiring "members, staff and the public to wear masks, submit to temperature checks prior to entering the building each day and observe social distancing guidelines outlined by public health experts while inside the Bank of Springfield Center." Any member violating the rule change would be removed.

The House approved the new rules as session began Wednesday.

Bailey said he would not wear a mask, and a motion was made to remove him from the chamber.

The vote to remove Bailey was bipartisan, but fellow downstate Republicans Terri Bryant, Dave Severin and Patrick Windhorst all voted against the move.
