HARRISBURG (WSIL) -- The Fortress Community is a nonprofit organization helping to provide clothes, shoes, appliances, and other services to people in Saline County.
"The Fortress Community is a local mission organization for Saline County area that works with the partnerships of the people here in Saline County and also the local churches," said founder Kyle Harbison.
The organization took off when the pandemic first began.
"The main thing we've really been doing is emergency relief. When COVID hit, the kids that were school aged, they weren't able to shop. And typically we'll get clothing for them. Summer clothes and spring clothes," said Harbison.
So far, they have received a lot of support.
"We get our clothing through local churches, and we also get donations usually every day down there at the store," said Harbison.
Donations allowed them to help 400 families in Saline County since the start of the pandemic.
Their new project is converting a house into an after school center.
"So it will actually have a bunch of classrooms in it. It's got seven classrooms so we're hoping to have at least 10 students per classroom. And in that we're hoping to deliver a Christ-centered after school program for kids," said Harbison.
Harbison said that a program like the Fortress Community helps bring people together.
"Now more than ever is a time for the community to come together,"said Harbison.
