WGEM/WSIL -- The start of the flu season is right around the corner and cases are usually first reported in October.
Local health officials across Illinois are urging everyone to get a flu shot this year.
In Adams County, located in western Illinois, the health department is worried about what could happen if there was a large flu outbreak at the same time as COVID-19.
Adams County already has a high amount of COVID-19, so health officials worry they may not have enough hospital space and other resources to help everyone who may be in need of help if they come in sick with the flu.
“It’s always important to get your flu shot. We feel like it’s even more important now with the COVID-19 going on, if we can protect you from the flu. If you can not get the flu that would be even better with COVID-19 going on to keep those hospital numbers down for people who really truly need treatment," Misty Spilker, Adams County Health Department nursing supervisor.
Getting the flu shot, even if you’re healthy, will help to protect people who can’t get the shot, like babies under six-months-old and people with weakened immune systems.
The regular flu vaccine is typically around $30. Check with your local health department for locations to receive the vaccine.
