The 5th annual Gavin's Hallows Eve 5K is in remembrance of Gavin Lowe. The 12-year-old boy tragically passed away on Christmas day in 2019 at the hands of his own father.ÌýHis death was ruled murder-suicide just days after the incident.
Gavin's family wanted to turn grief into a way to raise awareness about domestic abuse and started the non-profit called .
One way the non-profit spreads awareness through southern Illinois is the 5K event. It allows people to jog, walk, and just get together while remembering the young life taken too soon.Ìý
This year, the 5K comes in celebration of what would have been Gavin's 17th birthday. It's taking place Saturday, October 19th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Herrin from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.Ìý
There will be raffle prizes, food trucks, costume contests, LIVE music and much more, so organizers do encourage you to get dressed up.
This event also finds ways to give back to the region. One year, profits raised went back to the St. Francis Care animal rescue.
This year, profits will be donated to the family of . A 7-year-old boy from Marion who passed away this September after a battle with Leukemia.Ìý
