BENTON, Ill. -- Take Action Today announced a tentative opening date for a cooling center for Benton on Wednesday afternoon.聽
The city of Benton took to 聽to announce the center is expected to open on July 1. The center will serve as a place for community members to cool off and receive food.聽
"During heat waves, temperatures can soar to dangerously high levels, making it difficult for individuals without access to air condition to stay safe,' said the city on Facebook. "Prolonged exposure to excessive heat can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration and other serious health complications. Crisis cooling centers offer a refuge where people can escape the heat, rehydrate and find temporary relief."
The center will have space spaces to cool down, hydrate, shower, wash laundry, link to community resources and more.聽
Benton's cooling center will be open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Weekend operations may occur if the staff is available.聽
