(WSIL) -- Several mobile customers can now make 1-800 calls from their cellphones, after not being able to call toll free numbers.

Ameren Illinois Communications Director Tucker Kennedy tells us the company had to move fast after learning some customers couldn't get through on their toll free number.

He explains,"When we learned that we quickly determined that we need to establish a temporary number for customers to utilize to report either a gas leak or an emergency."

Ameren set up 309-972-5271 an alternative number on Monday after getting those reports. Kennedy says after reviewing the issues, Ameren found nothing wrong on their end.

Officials with AT-&T, Sprint, and Verizon tell us, they're not aware of any widespread issues, but are looking into it.

Ameren meanwhile wants customers to know there are many ways to reach out them. Kennedy adds, "We have to be able to make sure that our customers are able to get a hold of us very quickly and that's why we have an 800 number."
