Cape Girardeau Police create a "Safe Exchange Zone"

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) Social media marketplaces have made buying and selling items more convenient.

Interactions in exchanging goods could pose a risk for people if not in a secure area.

To help combat the issue, the Cape Girardeau Police Department created a "Safe Exchange Zone".

The area is a designated spot for exchanging goods or having supervised interaction.

The police department says the area is monitored 24/7 with security camera footage.

Police say they will not intervene in interactions unless a crime is committed.

If you do plan on meeting someone for an exchange, the police department has a few reminders:

  • Do not give out sensitive information

  • Never go alone

  • Notify a family member or friend

  • Disable all location services on your devices

  • Never meet at your home
