CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) � On average, people have over 100 online accounts. The Carbondale Police Department says if you aren't taking preventative measures, it could be easy for hackers to steal your information. 

Authorities say in today's world, user names, passwords, and PINs are needed for almost every online transaction or account. 

The police department says it's always important to choose a strong password. This includes passwords with eight characters and contains letters and numbers. 

While it's convenient, police say having the same password for every account or site makes you more vulnerable to a cyber attack. 

Police recommend changing your password every 90 days. 

If you fall victim to a cyber-attack, you can contact the . It is also recommended to contact your local FBI office or your local police department.
