CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- The city of Carbondale's Memorial Day ceremony will continue through the COVID-19 pandemic but in a different way from years prior.
The city will be releasing a video on Monday at 10 a.m. of its ceremony, honoring the service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The virtual ceremony will have remarks from Mayor Mike Henry, Senator Dick Durbin, as well as feature the decoration of graves and markers by first responders.
The video will occur at the same time as when the event is usually held at Woodlawn Cemetery.
The city's Public Relations Officer, Roni LeForge, says city leaders wanted to find a way to keep the tradition going.
"We originally thought that we were going to have to cancel the Memorial Day ceremony; it's been a long-running tradition here in Carbondale, and the Carbondale City Council wanted to make sure that the Memorial Day ceremony wasn't cancelled just because of COVID-19," says LeForge.
The ceremony can be found on the city's Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter accounts - as well as on local channel 16.
The video will also stay online so that people can watch at anytime even after the ceremony has ended.
