CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- People who live in the Cape Girardeau area are being asked by the Better Business Bureau to be on the look out for a new mailing scam.
They say it happens when you try to go to the USPS website and fill out a change of address form.
If you're not careful, you may accidentally choose a fake website, set up by a scammer. If that happens, scammers could take you for as much as $80.
According to USPS it should only cost you a $1.05.
In 2020, there were more than 1,500 government agency imposter scams.
Whitney Quick, the Regional Director for the BBB, provides a few tips to avoid this scam from happening to you.
"Double check the URL. It can be really easy to click a sponsored ad or an imposter website without noticing. So before you enter any sensitive information or personal information double-check. Also beware of any third party websites. Some websites appear to offer legitmate services but they are only a front for scams," said Quick.
The BBB says you should pay with a credit card online, that way you can dispute fraud charges that aren't yours.
If you run into scam websites, you can report them to the BBB, FTC and even the FBI.
