(CNN) -- Kroger has announced a new policy to promote physical distance between its customers.

, Kroger will limit how many customers can shop in its stores at one time.

The grocer says building code usually allows one customer per 60-square feet, but that number will now be cut in half, allowing one customer per 120-square feet.

"Kroger's introduction of customer capacity limits is one more way we are doing our part to flatten the curve while operating as an essential business, providing our customers with access to fresh, affordable food and products," said Mary Ellen Adcock, Kroger's senior vice president of operations. "During this national pandemic, we are committed to adopting preventive measures to help protect the safety and health of our associates, customers and communities."

Customer traffic in stores will be monitored by existing infrared technology.

In addition to limiting the number of shoppers, Kroger is also installing plexiglass partitions at checkouts, increasing daily cleaning practices, and adjusting store hours.

Kroger operates more than 2,700 stores under a variety of names.
