(WEEK/CNN) -- Kroger, in the midst of a coin shortage throughout the U.S., says customers will have still have options when paying with cash. But receiving coins in change won't be one of them.
In a statement from a company spokesperson, Kroger said it will be returning the amount owed to the customer to their loyalty card, and that amount will automatically be applied to the customer's next purchase.
The second option will be for the cashiers to round up, donating the extra change to the Zero Hunger|Zero Waste Foundation, supporting the service of their local food bank.
The Federal Reserve that the coronavirus pandemic disrupted the normal circulation patterns for U.S. coins.
The U.S. Mint has also had to slow production of coins due to pandemic staffing adjustments.
