WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. -- Warrants were issued for 28 people across Williamson County after deputies checked on nearly 200 sex offenders across the county recently.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said for the past 10 days, they have conducted a sex offender compliance operation for all 186 registered sex offenders throughout Williamson County.

At the conclusion of the operation, 17 people have been arrested and 11 others are wanted, all served with arrest warrants and charging them with violating the Sex Offender Registration Act, which is a Class 3 Felony, the sheriff's office reported.

Sheriff Diederich stated, “Convicted sex offenders, required by law to register, must do so at the Sheriff’s Office or their local police department depending on where they reside. Convicted sex offenders are well informed of these requirements and those who choose to ignore this responsibility will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. This requirement should come as no surprise as the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office manages the process with those required to register on a daily basis and on July 7, 2023, took similar action to charge 36 individuals with this same violation.

Sheriff Diederich informs the public when a person registers, it allows residents to be informed with the violations of the offenders. It also provides the offender's residential address to the public.

Nearly two dozen deputies visited homes and work places to verify accurate registration of the offenders over the 10-day period.
