Man Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in Metropolis Death Investigation

METROPOLIS, IL (WSIL) -- A Massac County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against Jonathon J. Riley for the offense of Involuntary Manslaughter in connection with the death of Samuel Scott Stalions at the Acee's Truck Stop in Metropolis, Illinois on May 2, 2023.

The indictment alleges that Jonathon J. Riley recklessly performed an act likely to cause death or great bodily harm in that he held Samuel Scott Stalions on the ground by placing his knee on the neck of Samuel Scott Stalions and thereby causing the death of Samuel Scott Stalions.

The Metropolis Police Department conducted a thorough investigation of the matter and the grand jury received testimony from numerous witnesses over multiple days of testimony prior to returning the indictment.

The charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

METROPOLIS (WSIL) -- A fight at a Metropolis truck stop leaves one man dead and lands another in jail.

Police were called to the Acee's Truck Stop at 105 East Fifth Street around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday night. When they arrived, they found a man laying on the floor in the gaming room unconscious, Metropolis Police Department said in a release.

Officers performed first aid measures on the victim and he was taken to Massac Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the victim is Samuel S. Stalions, 41, of Golconda.

Upon review of surveillance video, officers determined the victim was pepper sprayed just before a fight began. They identified Jonathon J. Riley, 36, of Kirksey, Kentucky knocking the victim to the ground, choking and then putting his knee on the victim's neck and using his weight to apply pressure until the victim was unconscious.

Metropolis police said Riley was arrested and charged with first degree murder. He was taken to the Massac County Detention Center.
