MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) -- A Murphysboro man was sentenced to more than four decades in prison last week in connection to a murder in Jackson County last year.

The Jackson County State's Attorney Marsha Cascio-Hale said Timothy Gassel, 33 of Murphysboro, was sentenced to 45 years to the Illinois Department of Corrections after he earlier pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of Autumn Cole.

Cascio-Hale said the guilty plea was in October of 2024, in connection to a murder investigation on May 25, 2024, in Jackson County.

Details were released by Cascio-Hale on Thursday about the day of the shooting. A person called 911 on May 25, 2024, and reported an argument between Gassel and Cole in connection to some items from the car. It was also reported the caller's husband witnessed the shooting of Cole.

Jackson County deputies arrested Gassel minutes later and he was then charged with two counts of first-degree murder charges.

“The experience and dedication of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office to this investigation allowed for the swift apprehension and prosecution of Gassel, and for justice to be rendered for the victim and her family, stated Jackson County State’s Attorney Marsha L. Cascio-Hale.

The sentencing took place on February 13. Cascio-Hale said Gassel will serve 100 percent of the 45-year sentence in IDOC.
