The City of Carbondale says nine businesses were damaged overnight.
The city says police are investigating property damage at University Mall, JC Penny's, Game Stop, Old Navy, Hibbett Sports, The Finish Line, Main Street Liquors and Tobacco, Blue Fish Liquors and Sally Beauty Supply.
In a statement Monday, city leaders thanked those who had gathered peacefully earlier Sunday night and said vandalism and burglary would not be accepted.
The city's statement is below:
The City of Carbondale would like to thank those who gathered Sunday for a candlelight vigil at Turley Park honoring the life of George Floyd. We would also like to express appreciation to the protestors who peacefully marched downtown following the vigil. We understand your frustrations and feel them too. The City of Carbondale stands with you in sadness and solidarity.
Unfortunately, following an evening of peace, several suspects vandalized multiple Carbondale businesses. The City’s police department will investigate the damage to property at nine businesses, including several in the University Mall.
The City is committed to serving the people of Carbondale in a fair, equitable, and respectful manner but cannot accept vandalism and burglary, or acts of violence that compromise the safety of our community.
We ask all of our residents to remain calm during this chaotic time. We understand citizens need to demonstrate but encourage everyone to do so responsibly and peacefully.
