Cat boxes at Herrin School

HERRIN, Ill. (WSIL) -- Construction students at a local high school are doing their part in helping reduce the stray cat population in their community.

The Herrin Community Unit School District No. 4 has a group of dedicated high school construction students who are building cat houses to help shelter them and trap the felines for a local animal organization.

Students built four cat houses which will be donated to a local animal organization. One of the four will stay at the Herrin School District Office and the other three will be placed throughout the city. Each house has enough room to shelter a dozen cats.

This project is designed to help the stray cat population keep warm, while also helping the local animal organizations trap the cats so they can spay or neuter them in an effort to help control the cat population throughout the city.

The high school received a grant to help with building the cat homes. The school stated this project supports the creative efforts by the students and aligns with their educational goals by helping them earn their College and Career Pathway Endorsement through the Illinois School Board of Education.

The construction teacher at the high school is David Jordan. He has been helping the students with brainstorming, planning and executing the project. The Herrin Grant Administration Office secured the funding for the project.
