Marion High School Anglers Reel in Championship Victory

  • 0

Marion, Ill (WSIL) Two Marion High School students just landed the biggest win of their young careers—and their community is ready to celebrate.

Landon Gabby and Kolby Baker reeled in a victory at a recent high school fishing tournament, securing the championship title with a total catch weighing 14 pounds and 1 ounce.

For Gabby, the win is the culmination of years of dedication. "I’ve fished (the Bassmasters Pro competition) since seventh grade," he said.

But their road to victory wasn’t smooth sailing. The weather was the biggest challenge; "it was really windy," Baker said. "But We adapted."

That adaptability proved to be the key to success, helping them bring home not just a big catch, but an even bigger trophy. "It was unexpected", said Baker, but definitely what we went down there to do, he added.

The city of Marion is hosting a homecoming celebration for the young anglers, at 7 p.m. tonight starting at the Mach 1 Station in Marion.

For anyone hoping to follow in their footsteps, Gabby and Baker have one simple piece of advice, "Don’t give up, and Make the best of every opportunity."

And with a championship under their belts, these two are proving that hard work, skill, and perseverance can pay off in a big way.
