HARRISBURG, Ill. (WSIL) --- When parents drop their children off at school, they want to know the kids are safe.
Emily Evans-Wells is the Nurse at Harrisburg Middle School, she wanted to add some extra supplies to each classroom.
“So I reached out to SIH and told them some of the needs that I would like to see implemented here at the school. And they were gracious enough to donate some monetary donations and supplies to make that happen for us,� Evans-Wells said.
Those supplies would be emergency kits.
“In the event that we would have either a natural disaster or an intruder drill, um, I would like each classroom to have a kit that would have medical supplies that could be utilized if needed,� Evans-Wells said.
Angie Bailey is SIH’s System Director for Community Health. She says they work with schools and other organizations in the area to get them prepared.
“This school, their need was the first aid kit and supplies. Other schools we've worked with on PE grants, school food service grants and other materials. So again, the whole goal is to create that healthy school environment,� Bailey said.

The lockdown kits for Harrisburg Middle School included first aid, medical supplies, flashlights, water and snacks. On top of that each of the schools in Unit 3 received a “stop the bleed� kit. Those include a tourniquet and pressure dressing.
Arien Herrmann is the manager of SIH office of EMS and Disaster preparedness, and he trains people on how to use a “stop the bleed� kit.
“So if there ever would be an incident in a classroom that involves life-threatening, bleeding, the teacher is going to be able to immediately step in,� Herrmann said.
Herrman shared that they work with the organizations to fit the needs of what they might need in the different first aid kits.
Herrman also shared that anyone who wants to learn how to be prepared on their own can learn more with the too.
