NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. (WSIL) -- The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) confirmed a measles case in an adult resident of New Madrid County. Officials have stated there is no indication of widespread public exposure.
The DHSS is working closely with the New Madrid County Health Department to investigate the disease and advise those potentially exposed. The case is not connected to prior cases in Missouri.
"For those unvaccinated or those unsure of their vaccination status, now is the time to review records and get caught up if needed," Dr. George Turabelidze, state epidemiologist with DHSS, said.
Measles is highly contagious and can lead to severe health complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis. The virus can be transmitted through direct contact with infectious droplets or airborne spread.
Individuals who suspect they have measles should isolate and contact their healthcare provider before going to a medical facility. Health official say the best prevention is the MMR vaccine, which provides 97 percent protection against measles infections.
Health care providers are urged to follow the infection control recommendations and report suspected cases to local health departments immediately. More information is available at .
