ULLIN, Ill. (WSIL) -- The ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý 7 Health Department is reminding you to be prepared for an earthquake and have a plan on what to do if one happens.

The New Madrid Seismic Zone quakes in 1811 and 1812 were reported to be at least a 7.0 magnitude or larger, along with hundreds of other quakes throughout the months which were a magnitude of 5 to 6.5.

Hundreds continue to occur on a yearly basis in the New Madrid region, however, they currently are of much lesser magnitudes than those previously mentioned.

According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, they state some scientists believe the probability of a large earthquake of at least a magnitude of 7.0 is about 10% in 50 years.

Earthquakes can cause major damage for many miles, so it's important you are prepared with a kit which includes enough food and water for several days, a flashlight, a fire extinguisher and a whistle, S7HD stated.

The health department also says it's important to practice what you and your family should do during an earthquake...

  • If you are in a car, pull over, and stop. Set your parking brake.
  • If you are in bed, turn face down and cover your head and neck with a pillow.
  • If you are outdoors, stay outdoors away from buildings.
  • If you are inside, stay and do not run outside and avoid doorways.

Drop, Cover, and Hold On! is the best way to stay safe with earthquakes. The phrase reminds people to:

  • Drop down to the floor.
  • Take cover under a sturdy desk, table, or other furniture.
  • Hold on to that object until the shaking ends.
