WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) -- Crews responded to a train derailment of 19 cars in Williamson County on Friday.

The Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich said multiple coal cars derailed in the northwestern portion of Williamson County along Crawford Road just north of Locust Road.

Diederich said there was no threat to the public.

Williamson County Emergency Management Agency Director Brian Burgess stated a total of 19 cars derailed.

Burgess said Canadian National Railway crews are responding to the scene. Burgess also said there were no injuries, fires or dangerous goods reported.

Crews are planning on restoring the track so train traffic could move again later tonight, if possible, Burgess reported.

The clean up process could take a few days.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
