WAYNE COUNTY, Ill. (WEVV) Authorities in Wayne County, Illinois say they've charged a man with arson and burglary after a fire that happened earlier this month.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says the house fire happened back on Sept. 16 in Fairfield.

Deputies investigating the incident were told that a man in dark clothes was seen leaving the home with a wagon moments before the fire broke out.

As authorities searched the area, they say they were able to find Mikkel Pierce of Albion a short time later.

Through an investigation, officials say they learned that Pierce had used the wagon to steal belongings from the home. They say he also had meth on him.

After resisting arrest, Pierce was taken into custody and booked into the Wayne County Jail, according to the sheriff's office. They say that Pierce admitted to starting the fire during an interview with deputies.

Pierce faces charges of arson, meth possession, burglary, and resisting arrest in connection to the incident.
