...FLOOD WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.

* WHERE...A portion of southern Illinois, including the following
counties, Franklin, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Perry,
Pulaski, Union, Wayne and Williamson.

* WHEN...Until 700 PM CDT Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying
and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Low-water
crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 817 AM CDT, Even though the heavy rain has ended,
substantial flooding continues across much of the warned
area. Between 5 and 9 inches of rain have fallen since the
start of the event on Wednesday. Additional light rainfall
amounts up to one tenth of an inch are possible in the warned
area.
- Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Carbondale, Marion, Mount Vernon, Herrin, West Frankfort,
Murphysboro, Benton, Du Quoin, Pinckneyville, Carterville,
Fairfield, Anna, Johnston City, Mcleansboro, Christopher,
Jonesboro, Vienna, Rend Lake Area, Sesser and Zeigler.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate route.

...FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY
MORNING...

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 to 30 degrees
possible. Everyone should see a 32 degree low or close to it.

* WHERE...All of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western
Kentucky, and southeast Missouri.

* WHEN...From late Monday night through Tuesday morning.

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other
sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor
plumbing.

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

...The Flood Warning is extended for the following rivers in
Illinois...

Big Muddy River near Plumfield affecting Franklin and Williamson
Counties.

.One more round of moderate rainfall is expected today before we
begin to dry out. The Big Muddy River will rise above flood stage
this afternoon and crest next week.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Caution is urged when walking near riverbanks.

Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive
cars through flooded areas.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

NOTICE...

* WHAT...Moderate flooding is forecast.

* WHERE...Big Muddy River near Plumfield.

* WHEN...From this afternoon until further notice.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 10:00 AM CDT Saturday the stage was 18.1 feet.
- Forecast...The river will rise above flood stage this
afternoon to 28.5 feet early Monday morning. It will then
fall Tuesday evening. It will rise to 28.1 feet early
Wednesday afternoon. It will then fall again but remain above
flood stage.
- Flood stage is 20.0 feet.
- Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of
28.6 feet on 05/02/2017.

Nominations for Herrin's Chamber of Commerce Dinner

HERRIN, IL (WSIL) -- We're just days away from the fall season, but the Herrin Chamber of Commerce is already looking ahead to 2025. 

The Annual Dinner will take place at the start of the new year and reflect back on 2024. 

The group wants to know of you've caught a local resident doing a good deed and want to recognize them. 

Below is a list of awards that are traditionally given each year. If you believe someone has lived a life of service in the last year, please share a little bit about them. 

  • °Õ³ó±ðÌýYoung Citizen of the Year award is given to an individual under 40 years old who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service in the community. 
  • °Õ³ó±ðÌýCitizen of the Year award is presented to a local resident who has made a significant impact on our community and who has consistently demonstrated an outstanding commitment in service to others.
  • °Õ³ó±ðÌýDistinguished Service award is given to an individual or group who has gone above and beyond in service to our Chamber and community during the past year.
  • °Õ³ó±ðÌýBusiness of the Year award recognizes a Herrin Chamber business with outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the economic growth and quality of life in Herrin. Some of the specific criteria that could be considered for this award include: growth, business strategy, community involvement, and exceptional customer service.
