Quiet Thursday, before next Winter Storm moves in Friday

WSIL(Carterville, Ill.) -- This morning, we are tracking temperatures that are on the cold side. Temperatures are in the single digits across Mt. Vernon and in most of our northern counties with the low to mid teens for everyone else. Wind chill values are also dangerously cold with wind chill values running in the single digits for most places, and below zero in our northern counties. 

For the rest of the day, we are tracking temperatures that will still be in the mid to upper 20s for the midday hours, but highs today will get close to the freezing mark for most of us in ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois, while further south, we are tracking temperatures that could hit the mid 30s. Skies today will be mostly sunny for the first half of the day, but, cloud cover will be on the increase in the evening and overnight hours out ahead of our next winter storm. For this storm, there is a Winter Storm Warning in place from midnight Friday through midnight Saturday. 

Winter Weather Alerts

Conditions will remain dry through most of the evening. But, after midnight, we are tracking snow showers that will begin to enter our region first in our western counties, light snow will gradually become more widespread as we go through our Friday morning commute. Moderate to heavy snow should enter the region after 8 or 9 tomorrow morning, and last through the early afternoon. Gradually, snow will grow lighter through the later afternoon. Snow will exit the region in a west to each fashion, first in southeastern Missouri around 4PM, and in southern Illinois around 6PM. However, we could still see a couple of isolated snow showers between 8PM and early Saturday morning, but the bulk of the accumulations will come in the first half if the day into the early afternoon hours.  

Speaking of accumulations, boradly, we could see 3-6 inches of snow across most of the region, with lighter totals further north, around 1-2 inches, and heavier totals further south of 4-6 inches, with locally higher totals possible across the entire region. Those locally higher totals will depend on where the heavier snow bands track.

Temperatures will be in the lower 30s, around the freezing mark tomorrow for highs, and for Saturday, we will see similar highs. Temperatures Skies will be overcast Friday and through the first half of the day Saturday, with more sunshine during the afternoon. Temperatures will be in the upper 20s early next week.
