CARBONDALE, Ill (WSIL) The Stage Company invites theatergoers to experience the thought-provoking drama Machinal, written by Sophie Treadwell and directed by Sarah Dubach. This bold production explores the societal pressures and personal struggles of a young woman, culminating in a gripping tale of rebellion, love, and tragedy.
Inspired by the true 1928 story of Ruth Snyder, Machinal follows a young stenographer navigating a life dictated by societal expectations. Forced into a loveless marriage, she longs for freedom and self-expression, which she finds fleetingly in an affair with a younger man. The story takes a dark turn as her desperation leads her to commit an unspeakable act, ultimately sealing her fate.
Performances run February 7-9 and February 13-16 at The Stage Company.
