CAIRO, Ill. -- A jury sentenced a man to seven decades in prison for a murder in Alexander County.

Samuel L. Lewis, 43, of Cairo, received his sentence on Thursday after a jury declared him guilty on January 15. The jury believed Lewis shot the gun that killed the victim.

Lewis will spend 70 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. This punishment breaks down to 45 years on First Degree Murder and 25 years for the statutory firearm enhancement.

The investigation into Lewis began on May 9, 2023 when Illinois State Police learned of the death of Lafayette D. Woods, 34. The Cairo Police Department called ISP to investigate the shooting in the 2400 block of Sycamore Street.

Police arrested Lewis after about a week of investigation on May 16, 2023.
