ANNA, Ill. -- Two local middle school students will get the chance to showcase their art later this month at the Anna Arts Center.Â
Twelve-year-olds Emmett Whiteford and Greenlee Zelasko both love musicals. The best friends from Carterville used this love to craft their own show, "Breaking Free: The Musical," an impressive feat for two middle schoolers.Â
"Thanks to the incredible experiences we have had performing in musicals from a very young age, our love for musical theater has grown and we wanted to write and direct our own show," said Emmett and Greenlee.Â
"Breaking Free" focuses on Claire, a seventh grader who runs away from home after facing intense bullying at school. Along the way, she meets new friends and learns the important lesson of embracing her unique self.Â
Emmett and Greenlee will also perform in the show alongside Nova Clark and Rose Whiteford of Marion, Jayden Zelasko and Aubrey Hefferman of Carterville, Jase Burns of Herrin, Avaida and Lanori Cole of Johnston City, and Mariah Wright of Carterville.
"We want all kids to know that everyone has unique talents and gifts," the writers say. "Never listen to any voice that says otherwise!"Â
Performances are set at the Anna Arts Center starting Friday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m. Subsequent showtimes include Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2:00 p.m.Â
Tickets are available , and proceeds will go toward the Arts Center and Shawnee Hills Art Council.Â
