McPhail mugshot

CALLOWAY COUNTY, Ky. -- Deputies arrested a man they found unconscious on Friday after a brief chase.

Deputies arrived at a crashed car around 4:00 p.m. Friday to find Charles M. McPhail, 48, of Murray, sitting unconscious across the wheel. The car rested in the 9800 block of Hwy 94E. The car remained in drive, and McPhail's foot still pushed on the gas.

Officials approached the car with caution to get McPhail out of his seat. While doing so, police reported McPhail regained consciousness and began to panic. McPhail shifted the car into reverse and tried to flee.

A release from the department stated the danger level for the deputies increased when McPhail managed to back his car off the tree on which it crashed. McPhail fled the scene across a variety of terrain until he arrived at his house.

Deputies managed to catch up to McPhail and arrest him at his home. They brought him to the Murray Calloway County Hospital, but McPhail refused medical assistance. Officials complied with his requests and sent him straight to the Calloway County Detention Center.

McPhail faces the following charges:

  • Fleeing and Evading Police, 1st degree, Class D felony
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence, 1st degree aggravated circumstances
  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident
  • Wanton Endangerment, 1st degree, Class D felony
