WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. -- The Williamson County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation into its officers after an inmate released from custody filed a complaint.Â
The office received the complaint on Monday about an incident that occurred on Sunday, June 28, at 9:09 p.m.
The sheriff's office stated the information provided to them described the event as involving excessive use of force by a Correctional Officer.
The sheriff's office says the internal investigation yielded and other evidence, of which probable cause of an offense has occurred.
"The conduct which has occurred in this matter is inconsistent with the values and expectations of the Williamson Country Sheriff's Office," said Sheriff Jeff Diederich. "Those sworn to protect are held to the highest standard. Regrettably, those involved in this incident failed to meet that standard."
A press release from the Williamson County Sheriff's office says four deputies received suspensions with pay, pursuant to policy, awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
According to online court records, Jeffrey L. Stallings faces charges of Official Misconduct and Aggravated Battery. Both of these are felony charges.
Stallings was taken in custody and housed at a nearby county detention center.
A Jail status hearing for Stallings was set on the afternoon of July 3. Online court records stated the defendant was present and was advised of his rights, charges and penalties. A preliminary hearing was set for August 14, at 1:15 p.m. in Williamson County.
"As law enforcement officers, we are charged with holding those who commit criminal activity accountable," said Diederich. "Without first holding our own accountable, we would fail to maintain the public's trust."
The investigation remains open. The sheriff's office says it anticipates more charges and actions.Â
