MAYFIELD, Ky. -- Mayfield received $31.5 million in federal funding to help rebuild the city after tornadoes wrecked the city in December 2021.Â
Gov. Andy Beshear announced the funding on Wednesday. The Rebuild Downtown Mayfield Project hopes to improve life for the city's residents via a focus on job growth, driver and pedestrian safety, clean water systems, tree replacement and ADA accessible routes.Â
"After that storm, we made a promise to be with Western Kentucky until every life and structure was rebuilt," Gov. Beshear said. "We have seen successes in building hundreds of new homes for people who lost everything. But another major part of keeping our promise lies in making sure these communities recover and thrive."
Gov. Beshear worked with Mayfield Mayor Kathy O'Nan to secure the funding. The pair sent letters to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and met with federal officials.Â
The Kentucky Tranpsortation Cabinet will work with Mayfield on the town's roads.
