PADUCAH, Ky. -- The original Cumberland River "Smithland" Bridge on U.S. 60 has been completely demolished.

The bridge was destroyed in a series of short explosions Saturday morning. The first closed traffic at 9:00 a.m. and the second at 12:45 p.m.

The rest of the bridge will be cut up via jackhammer in the coming days.

Drivers were first able to cross the bridge in 1931. It was replaced by the new Jim R. Smith Memorial Bridge on May 15, 2023.
