One shot in abdomen, juvenile faces charges in Marion

MARION, Ill. -- One person was found with a gunshot wound and another person has been detained in Marion on Wednesday.

The Marion Police Department said the incident happened on Wednesday just after noon in Marion. Officers responded to the 200-block of East DeYoung Street for a male that advised police he was shot.

Once officers and paramedics got there to the area, they found a male who had a gunshot wound to the abdomen which they then starting giving him medical aid, according to police.

Police also said they learned a shooting took place in the 1800-block of N. State Street. Officers went to that area and detained a juvenile male who they said was involved in the incident. They also said they found and took a gun from the juvenile.

Marion Police Chief David Fitts said on Friday, the juvenile taken into custody and the man shot in the abdomen are connected.

Furthermore, Chief Fitts said the juvenile is facing charges.

While going to the shooting, police said a MPD officer was involved in a collision at the intersection of DeYoung and Court Street (Hwy 13 and Hwy 37 intersection). This crash involved multiple vehicles. The MPD officer and a driver from another vehicle were reported to have injuries and were taken to the Heartland Regional Medical Center.

News 3 has since learned the officer is at home and recovering. Chief Fitts said they expect him to make a full recovery and to hopefully be back on duty sooner rather than later.

This shooting incident is still under investigation.
