CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- A Missouri man was sentenced to 80 years in jail for killing a man in Carbondale in 2019.
Olando Sheron, of Sikeston, was found guilty of first-degree murder back in December 2022 in the death of Keon Cooper. On Thursday, January 25, 2024, Sheron was sentenced to the Illinois Department of Corrections for eight decades.
The sentencing is followed by three years of mandatory supervised release.
Multiple motions of a new trial were considered, however, the judge ruled no new trial before the sentencing took place, Jackson County State's Attorney Joe Cervantes said.Â
Cooper was shot multiple times in the parking lot behind Hangar 9 around 1 a.m. on Sunday December 1, 2019 and later died at a hospital. Sheron fled the area and went on the run for the next two years.
Sheron was caught in Gardena, California after a seven-mile police chase through Los Angeles County in October 2021, ending a two-year manhunt that involved U.S. Marshals and nationwide task forces.
Sheron was scheduled to be sentenced on November 30 at 9 a.m. at the Jackson County Courthouse in Murphysboro, but then later changed to January 25, 2024.
Another man, Tyren Johnson, was found guilty to murder in October of 2023. Johnson was one of two people arrested days after the 2019 shooting. Johnson's sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 14, 2024.
