CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The SIU Alumni Association gave out almost $60,000 in scholarships for students to attend the school in fall 2024.Ìý
The association gave $59,288 across 46 new and returning students. SIU says the money came from new and legacy donors and will help cover tuition and textbook costs. Recipients live across the map in states including Illinois, Delaware, Florida, Missouri and Texas.Ìý
"The Saluki family is strong in heart and generosity, and these scholarships are made possibly by our alumni, who are always excited to share pride in their university and give back to the students," said Director of the SIU Alumni Association Molly Hudgins. "Awards like these make all the difference in the world to many of these students, and I'm proud we're not only maintaining but growing giving among alumni."
Not all funding for the scholarships come out of the pockets of alumni, though. SIU says its alumni association hosted fundraising events around the area, including St. Louis and Chicago, that raised $2,500 and $10,000, respectively.Ìý
Hudgins says the school's pivot away from alumni memberships toward the financial support of scholarships has added to the increased fundraising successes.Ìý
"Students are the most important part of SIU," Hudgins said. "Our organization and the more than 260,000 alumni we represent have roles to play in mentoring and supporting these Salukis. We're always proud to do our part in crating new Salukis for life!"
