BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Saluki Softball team beat California 5-4 on Friday in the Baton Rouge regional as part of the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

The game was in favor of the Salukis early, taking a five run lead in the second inning on a wild pitch, hits and a sacrifice fly.
They even played some good defense and turned a double play to end the first inning.聽
California later scored three runs to cut the deficit 5-3 in favor of SIU.
The Salukis had several highlights, including a catch by Rylinn Groff off a pop up bunt and a crucial strikeout by Maddia Groff to end the third.

California added one more run, but Maddia Groff struck out the last batter to give SIU the victory. She ended up throwing 120 pitches and struck out four in the complete game win.
This is SIU's first softball post-season victory since 2019.
They will play on Saturday at noon against the winner between host LSU and Jackson State.
