COLLEGE STATION, TX (SIU ATHLETICS) -- Ricky Hurley punched his ticket to the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon in the hammer throw on day one of the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round in College Station, Texas.
In addition to Hurley qualifying for the national meet for the second time in his career,ÌýWillie Johnson moved through to Friday's 400-meter dash quarterfinal. Johnson ran the quarter-mile in 46.55 and clocked the 18th-best qualifying time.Â
Hurley took eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of 218'-9" (66.69m). In 2018, Hurley finished 12th in the hammer throw at the West Prelims to advance to the NCAA Championship meet, where he placed 20th. SIU men's and women's throwers have combined to advance to the NCAA Championship meet 21 times in the event since the NCAA adopted the current regional format in 2010.
Three Salukis fell just short of qualifying for the national meet.  ran a personal-best 14.02 in the 110m-hurdles to finish 30th.   finished 21st in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 59'-11" (18.26m). With his PR, Meyer moves up to eighth on SIU's all-time outdoor shot put list.  ran 53.24 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish 44th.
