EWING (WSIL) -- Our Storm Track 3 meteorologists traveled to Franklin County to share their love for weather with more than 200 students.
"In Kindergarten they're learning to observe weather, what it looks like, what it feels like, what the wind is, what clothing is appropriate for weather," explains Joni Page, interventionist at Ewing Grade School.
Page says they continue to expand upon that knowledge in the higher grades.
"My third graders are doing weather with their mystery science too, and we're learning about the water cycle. We talked about the hail storm in Guatemala from 2019 and we did a mystery on that, on why that formed, and it looked like ice even though it was the middle of summer."
"The rain froze up in the clouds. It was really high up, and it hit the ground, and it advanced into a really big hail," says student Westin Ing.
The students have many different teachers throughout the day. English teacher Becky Jones says in her class, the kids often write about what they're learning in another subject.
Page explains, "In third grade, for example, in art we did how to build a snowman, and so they made their snowman, but then they had to really think about the steps that they used and put that on paper."
Jones says that kids have great imaginations, but sometimes it's hard to put that on paper.
"I usually give them some sort of graphic organizer just to plot some ideas, then put those into complete sentences, and then turning those into paragraphs and then eventually a paper."
Student Hudson Munoz says his favorite days at school are when they're learning about something challenging.
"I want to work for NASA because I want to be the first one to build the rocket that will send people to Mars," explains Munoz.
The Weather Academy will continue to journey through local schools through the end of the school year. Next week, they will take us to Herrin.
