More winter precipitation overnight expected!

Overnight Snow

CARTERVILLE Ill. (WSIL) -- Our impactful winter storm is still ongoing across the area. Stepping outside you can hear the tree branches crunching and breaking. That will continue to be the case through the night. We still will have the chance at more freezing rain as the backside of the system moves in tonight. Freezing drizzle and light rain continue across SIL as I'm writing this. This lighter freezing rain can accumulate much faster on trees and powerlines, so this could increase stress across area trees.

Another factor that increases tonight are the winds. Gusts potentially around 30 mph throughout tonight and tomorrow can cause more fallen trees and subsequent power outages. The back side of this upper low will also bring snowfall to the region overnight, so add on 1-2 inches of snow on all of this mess across SIL.

All of this combined with temperatures plunging into the low 20s overnight will create almost impossible driving conditions tomorrow morning. The next week we don't see temperatures get above freezing as well so allow yourself plenty of extra time before getting out.
