PADUCAH, Ky. (WSIL) As western Kentucky’s economy continues to grow, so does the need for better connectivity and Barkley Regional Airport is on the brink of a decision that could reshape travel for the entire region.
The airport has received bids from five commercial airlines to launch new service to and from Paducah. Those companies are, American Airlines, Air Wisconsin, Contour Airlines, Denver Air Connection, and SkyWest Airlines.
Currently, Barkley offers flights to Charlotte North Carolina, but this new partnership would allow the airport to service flights to two major cities, unlocking more travel options and potential economic growth.
Kat Byars, Marketing Manager & Public Information Officer at Barkley Regional Airport says, “We are hearing any and all opinions that our community has for us. We did the survey, we got a lot of results from that, which helped us get to this point. And we’re still hearing about what people would like to see come to Barkley Regional Airport. That’s very exciting and very helpful because the decision hasn’t been made yet.
Airport officials say the public still has time to weigh in. Feedback will help inform the airport board’s final recommendation, which is scheduled for July 8. From there, the board’s preferred choice will go to the U.S. Department of Transportation, which will make the final selection.
Beyond convenience, leaders say the stakes are high, this decision could influence regional job creation, tourism, and long-term economic development.
Byars explains, “We talk to our community, we look at their needs and what they want. Then we have our board who looks at the nitty gritty of it, like how can each airline benefit us and help our small regional airport grow into something bigger and sustain what we have.
While locals are excited about the possibility of flying directly to cities like Chicago, Atlanta, or Houston, officials remind residents that travel goes both ways. Byars adds, “They could come here and bring a whole bunch of new stuff for us. It works both ways".Â
For Barkley Regional, this isn’t just about more flights, it’s about building a future where Paducah and the surrounding region are better connected, more competitive, and open for opportunity.
