Carbondale Police release new details on standoff

UPDATED 5:15 p.m. TUESDAY, MARCH 24, 2020

Carbondale Police have identified the suspect as William J. Stewart, 27, of Carbondale.

Police say Stewart was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Stewart was taken to the Jackson County Jail.

Police continue to investigate.

CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- One person is in custody after a five hour standoff with Carbondale police.

According to Police Chief Jeff Grubbs, officers got reports of people shooting at each other around 3:30 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of East Chestnut Street.

One person fled into a home when officers arrived and refused to come out.

Grubbs tells News 3 that person refused to surrender despite hours of negotiations.

Around 8:30 p.m. a SWAT team went into the home and took the suspect into custody.

That suspect was not hurt. Neither were any of the officers involved.

The suspect's name isn't being released at this time.
