SIU student fatally shot, others injured

CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS (WSIL) -- A Southern Illinois University Carbondale student is fatally shot and others are injured.

UPDATE: 8/22/2021 at 3:15 p.m.

News 3 is learning more about the shooting after a press release from the Carbondale Police Department.

According to the press release, officers were called to the 500 block of West Cherry Street at 3:12 a.m. Sunday morning in response to shots fired at a residence. A party was taking place with both SIU students and non-students.  

When they arrived, officers found a gunshot victim and attempted life resuscitation measures. The victim was later pronounced deceased at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.  

While officers were at the hospital, three other victims came into the emergency department on their own from the same location with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.  

Carbondale police say the victim, who was fatally shot, is a student at SIU and is not being identified until next of kin notifications are complete.  

The other victims are also not being identified at this time and they are not associated with SIU.  

There is not any suspect information to provide at this point in the investigation.  

The SIU Police Department is assisting with the investigation that is currently active and ongoing.  Anyone with information about this incident or anyone who attended the party is encouraged to contact the police department at 618-457-3200 or Crime Stoppers at 618-549-COPS.

The Department of Public Safety at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is confirming that a student died after being involved in a shooting.

According to a security alert sent out on Sunday, the Carbondale Police Department is investigating the incident that took place at 501 W. Cherry.

The alert goes on to say that multiple people were injured including a student who died as a result of her wounds.

The student's family has been notified, and there's no suspect information at this time.
