METROPOLIS, Ill. (WSIL) -- A Metropolis officer was struck by a vehicle while responding to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 24 near the Ohio River on May 1, according to police.

The Metropolis Police Department said their officer, with lights and siren activated, was responding to the crash site when he encountered a pick-up truck blocking the interstate ramp. Police then said the driver, identified as 77-year-old Houston Henley, refused to move, blocking the officer's path.

Police said, as the officer approached the vehicle, Henley accelerated, hitting the officer. Metropolis Police then reported Henley then attempted to drive the wrong way but was stopped by other traffic.

Henley did not cooperate with the officer and bit the officer on the arm during the arrest attempt, police stated.

Henley was taken into custody and cited with aggravated battery and resisting arrest charges, Metropolis Police Department stated. He was reported to have been taken to the Massac Memorial Hospital and later released with a notice to appear.
