OZARK (WSIL) -- It's that time of year where Maple trees are ready to be tapped for their sap and turned into that sweet syrup we love for breakfast.
Although most us enjoy maple syrup on our waffles and pancakes, many of us are not sure how exactly it's made.
Families can learn about the ancient tradition, and get a first-hand experience tapping trees and boiling the sap down to create that sweet syrup.
It's all a part of Camp Ondessonk's Maple Sugarin' Weekend taking place February 29- March 1.
Those who attend show up to the camp on Friday night and are assigned to lodging and syrup making begins on Saturday and takes place all day.
It takes 40 gallons of tree sap to yield just one gallon of maple syrup.
Although participants learn a lot, organizers say a highlight is the quality time that they get to spend together.
Meals are provided for campers and the weekend concludes on Sunday with a pancake breakfast and bottle of maple syrup to take home.
The cost is $75 and the deadline to register is February 28th at 3 p.m.
