CARTERVILLE, Ill (WSIL) â€� Dive into the intersection of cinema, Black culture, and artistry at the upcoming Social Science Speaker Series at John A. Logan College. This thought-provoking lecture, titled Black Art in Nia DaCosta's Candyman, is free and open to the public.Â
The event will be on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 from 12:30 PM � 1:45 PM at John A Logan College in Room C138.
The event features Dr. Novotny Lawrence, a celebrated scholar in cinema and media studies. Dr. Lawrence brings a wealth of expertise as an author of Blaxploitation Films of the 1970s: Blackness and Genre, Editor of Documenting the Black Experience, Co-editor of the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Black Horror Films, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Popular Culture.
Currently Dr. Lawrence is the Director of the Black Film Center and Archive and Associate Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at Indiana University, Dr. Lawrence previously taught at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Iowa State University, earning accolades for his work in Black film and media.
Dr. Lawrence will analyze the artistic and cultural significance of Black art within Nia DaCosta’s modern reimagining of Candyman. Released in 2021, the film not only expanded on the lore of the original, but also served as a compelling commentary on race, community, and systemic injustice.
